Are you as excited as I am to finally see 2020 coming to an end?
Without question, 2020 was one of the most difficult storms all of us have had to weather. But one thing is certain: we powered through those many challenges together.
This year showed us what matters most in life, and also that we really don’t know what may happen in the next month…or even next year.
I know this may be a tough ask considering all that has happened this year, but because of you, we have a lot to be grateful for! Here are a few of the accomplishments you’ve made possible in 2020 because of your membership with MCFL:
- We forged a new partnership with Tom Harvey, Esq. and his Alliance to Stop Taxpayer Funding of Abortion. Together, in the months ahead, we will work to add a ballot initiative question to individual ballots in the coming years, in an effort to prevent your money from funding abortions in Massachusetts;
- We recruited more activists and volunteers this year than any year prior, who dedicated their time and energy educating others on the dangers of the R.O.E. Act while also promoting a life-affirming message in their communities;
- We engaged with every state legislator to educate him or her on the dangers of the R.O.E. Act. The result? A bill akin to those that sailed through states like New York and Virginia has yet to pass here in Massachusetts -- and has even been met with resistance by our governor -- due to your partnership with MCFL;
- We partnered with students at Harvard Right to Life to host the first Annual Dr. Mildred Fay Jefferson Symposium, where pro-life all-star Stephanie Gray Connors debated notorious abortion supporter Professor Peter Singer;
- MCFL’s online educational materials appeared over 1.51 million times in Google searches, resulting in nearly 50,000 engagements, mostly with students doing research and requesting quotes and interviews with MCFL staff and leadership;
- We held our first virtual event with abortion survivor Melissa Ohden and civil rights icon, Dr. Alveda King, bringing our events to the 21st century and reaching wider audiences;
We have a lot to be proud of in 2020, but we also have a LOT of work to do looking ahead to 2021.
First, it is blatantly obvious the pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood and NARAL of Massachusetts are furious with us for the amount of pressure you and your fellow MCFL members put on legislators. Despite many of their deplorable votes in favor of the heinous R.O.E. Act, many legislators were made very uncomfortable and only did so because they were threatened with having the pro-abortion machine run someone against them in a future primary. Of course, that still is no excuse for voting in favor of irresponsible legislation that endangers the lives of our women, girls and infants!
Additionally, Governor Baker, who is a self-proclaimed “pro-choice” politician, vetoed the new abortion bill (H. 5179) on Christmas Eve. This only happened because of you and your fellow MCFL members calling and emailing his office relentlessly. Yet the House and Senate chose to override his veto. Our work is not done yet!
As we look ahead to 2021 two things are perfectly clear:
We will be increasing our education efforts for students, the general public, and especially for legislators. We know our educational efforts are creating a more pro-life generation among the youth in our state. We saw a lot of people come over to our side when we explained the R.O.E. Act to them, and so we need to start re-educating the general public about the humanity of the unborn child and the horrors of abortion.
- MCFL will be taking on our largest pro-life recruitment efforts in the organization’s history. We hope to identify thousands of new pro-life individuals in the state who can help us in our grassroots pro-life efforts. We cannot allow the pro-abortion lobby to continue to have the influence they do in our state anymore. We must counter their efforts with a strong and robust pro-life organization. MCFL is the only single-issue organization dedicated to the LIFE issue that can accomplish this.
In order to do this, we need to raise an additional $30,000 before midnight on December 31st. This is an ambitious goal, but if everyone receiving this email gave their most generous gift today, we would easily reach our goal -- and begin our work immediately.
Can I count on you now to make an end-of-year contribution to MCFL to help us end 2020 on an optimistic, hopeful, life-affirming note? If yes, use this link to make your generous gift now: https://www.masscitizensforlife.org/2020campaign
As the only single-issue pro-life organization in Massachusetts, we rely 100% on the generosity of our faithful members and donors to accomplish our pro-life mission.
All of us at Massachusetts Citizens for Life are ready to fight on your behalf, but we need your help. Please click here to make your end-of-year gift today. Thank you! I look forward to updating you on our ascent to $30,000 in the coming days. Together, we can do it!
Myrna Maloney Flynn
President, Massachusetts Citizens for Life
Former chairman for pro-life activities to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Seán's leads the Boston Archdiocese, and has been a vocal advocate for the vulnerable since his appointment. When it comes to pro-life advocacy, he has stated in the past that, "Sadly, the government is not listening to the people."
Ordained at 26, and he became Bishop of Saint Thomas in 1985, working with the homeless and AIDS victims in the Virgin Islands and further building his reputation as hands-on pastor who worked with the poorest of the poor and got things done.
He moved to our Commonwealth, and the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1992. In 2003 he was the surprise choice of Pope John Paul II to be archbishop of Boston.
Cardinal Seán's motto, taken at his ordination, is the phrase QUODCUMQUE DIXERIT FACITE, which translates as “Do whatever He tells you.” The motto is taken from the Gospel of John, chapter 2, verse 5.
In addition to his anti-abortion advocacy, he has been consistently and compassionately pro-life when it comes to all marginalized human lives He founded El Pregonero, a Catholic Spanish-language newspaper. He joined us in fighting tirelessly against physician assisted suicide on each occasion that was brought to our legislature.
Hear him speak ONLINE on September 17, at 7:00PM. Register for the event here or by clicking the banner below.
True faith is realizing that I am useful to God not in spite of my scars but because of them. - Melissa Ohden
The countdown is on! One month from today, on Thursday, September 17, we will premiere our first-ever virtual event: the Annual Fundraising Banquet. Because Covid-19 prevents us from gathering in person, as we normally do by the hundreds, I invite you instead to join us from the comfort of your home that evening at 7:00.
So far, this has been a year of formidable challenges. In ways both big and small, the pandemic forced every one of us to find new ways to survive—as individuals, as families, as professionals, and as life advocates. The pain never overcame us, but I’m willing to bet we each wear one or two new scars from the experience. As we emerge from lockdown, I find that each of you has a survival story to share.
At our Banquet, in recognition of the uniquely human spirit that fuels these stories, we will celebrate not just the mere survival of a few very noteworthy individuals, but their inspirational stories of thriving. And it is this amazing group of guests which inspired our theme for this year’s event: Love. Fight. Thrive.
Attending an event has never been easier. All you have to do is register on our website now and then, on September 17, click the “join” button in the confirmation email you receive. Registration is FREE!
Here are the very special guests who have graciously agreed to participate in this historic event:
His Eminence, Seán Cardinal O'Malley, O.F.M., Cap
Carol Tobias, President of National Right to Life
Melissa Ohden, Abortion Survivor, Author
Dr. Alveda King, Civil Rights Icon & Niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Kelly Wilcox, Executive Director of Clearway Clinic
Bob Joyce, Esq., Former President of Pro-Life Legal Defense Fund
Gustavo Mendieta, Pro-Life Group of Lawrence/Grupo Provida de Lawrence
Joy Dupell and Baby Hope
I’ve got two additional updates to share today, both also the direct effects of Covid-19:
First, in case you haven't heard, the state legislature, citing the critical need to serve constituents during these uncertain times, voted to extend its formal session past the traditional July 31 end date and through the end of 2020. Of particular interest to you and me, the new deadline for the ROE Act is November 12. That means we need to keep calling the Judiciary Committee to urge them to oppose this irresponsibly-written bill. Send emails to [email protected] and [email protected] or call them at (617) 722-2396.
Second, since we cannot hold large gatherings but believe it imperative that our members participate in MCFL’s annual election, our Board of Directors voted at its August 1 meeting to postpone the Annual Meeting to the summer of 2021. Therefore, our current team of officers and directors will remain in place until then.
Finally, one word about the selection of Senator Kamala Harris as Mr. Biden's running mate: abortion. You'll hear more from my team and me about the senator's record on the issue. But, for now, her addition to the ticket simply confirms what the Democratic party has recently attempted to deny: its modern platform promotes abortion on demand at any stage of pregnancy.
Each of us can be useful now, because any scars we might possess have only strengthened us for what lies ahead. I have no doubt that, together, as we have for the last 46 years, we will love, fight, and thrive on the truth. Thank you for your ongoing partnership. We cannot do this work without you!
(Share our Banquet registration link with friends or family. https://www.masscitizensforlife.org/2020 The deadline for RSVPs is September 15. )
Can you push us over the line? We need to raise $10,000 by the end of 2019...
Dear friend -- We know there are a lot of organizations to consider when it comes to year-end giving. But there is no other organization in Massachusetts solely dedicated to the pro-life cause. Why not give a tax-deductible gift to the Massachusetts Citizens for Life Charitable Trust?
At MCFL, we use small and large gifts to save the lives of the unborn, toprotect mothers, the sick, and the elderly, and teach legislators and the public about the dignity of human life.
The generosity you’ve shown to MCFL has been remarkable, and we are so very grateful.
It is because of you that we have stopped the abortion lobby from passing their horrific ROE Act this year – a bill that would legalize passive infanticide, endanger our underage girls, and remove every pro-life law we’ve passed over the past five decades. But the ROE Act is not yet defeated. It remains a very real threat in 2020, and we will do everything within our power to block it, but we need your help.
We just announced a campaign to raise $10,000 between now and December 31st to help MCFL obtain the necessary funds to continue our work in 2020. Those funds will be used to educate thousands of Massachusetts residents who have not yet learned about the dangers of the ROE Act. They may be your neighbors, coworkers, extended family, or strangers you pass in the grocery store. We believe it is our duty to inform them.
You know as well as I do that we need to bring more people into the movement to protect life. We need to expand our reach and strengthen our impact, and your gift today will give us the means to nourish our life-saving programs and unite our supporters, whether they’re new, old, or prospective members of the MCFL family.
Please make a tax-deductible gift today to help us in our mission to grow the pro-life movement in Massachusetts. Click here: Secure.MCFL.Donate.org
I have every confidence that we’ll meet our $10,000 goal and look forward to celebrating with you as we ring in the new decade together Tuesday night. Thank you in advance for your participation.

P.S. Planned Parenthood and NARAL Massachusetts are notifying their members about how active and generous you have been. They are raising millions to push an agenda promoting abortion at any cost, even at the cost of women’s lives. We don’t need millions to accomplish our pro-life goals, but we do need your help! Your generous gift today will help us change more hearts and realize more for life in 2020 and through the new decade. Giving Tuesday gives the nation a chance to turn towards giving, rather than the consumerist taking so often tangled up with the holidays. At MCFL, we one-up that theme: Giving is good, but giving life is even better.
"I wouldn't have known I had another option if you hadn't been out here." Lilly (name changed for purposes of anonymity) met me in front of Planned Parenthood while I was helping others start sidewalk counseling. She was pregnant.
"You have no idea...I didn't know I could do anything about abortion until I started getting emails, coming to your events." Paul (named changed) pointed at the handout I had given him. "I thought I was the only one who, like, cared..."
"If I hadn't seen those [pointing at the fetal models] I would have aborted. I would have believed Evie was just a clump of my cells
"You gave me back two lives!"
"I found you online. Thank you for your website. Thank you for responding to my email, and for the note and money. It gave me the courage to keep my baby."
These are all people who -- because MCFL offered training or pregnancy resource help -- cherished or protected an unborn life.
We give a lot of things during the holiday season. We buy a lot of stuff. But we sometimes forget just how much we can give -- life! Hope. The physical presence and love that let a mother know she is not throwaway, and neither is her child.
Please partner with us, and give this holiday season to make sure that every child in Massachusetts -- in the womb or out of it -- can celebrate the holiday.
$1,000! Life is priceless!
$560 will sponsor weekly sidewalk counseling vigils for a month, and training for new counselors in Boston
$340 will provide two students or young professionals the chance to attend the National March for Life with our charted buses
$100 will sponsor a community screening of UnPlanned, especially on college campuses
$50 gives us the means to print pregnancy resource and fetal development brochures for our work outside abortion facilities for the Mont of December.
Finally, can you send our members caroling for life this Christmas? Any amount will support A Pro-Life Christmas Carol, reaching both women in crisis this season, and abortion workers.
Thank you for your generosity, your partnership, your life-saving gifts!
The MCFL Rose Drive is an annual memorial and fundraising outreach that is easy, attractive, and adaptable. Our chapters and our members have been offering roses outside churches or during fairs or community events almost since our inception.
What, then, is a rose drive?
Rose Drives serve a dual purpose: as memorials for preborn people, and as fundraisers. Roses purchased to remember the children and their mothers victimized by legal abortion directly support MCFL’s educational programs, community outreach, lobbying, and more.
Many drives are held on Mother’s Day, or during October, Respect Life Month. Many members get permission from their pastor to offer roses after services -- this has been a highly successful, as well as easy, strategy.
As you plan your own Rose Drive for the upcoming year, the following steps may be helpful:Read more
