Sharks or Kids? Show Some Concern

by Robert Aufiero

The following is a letter to the editor written by Mr. Aufiero, reprinted here with the author's permission }

After reading the release in The Patch regarding Senator Lewis and his support of children seeking adoption, I felt the need to respond.

The one particular reference in the release that calls for a reply is the sentence that talks about a population that may not always be visible. During the time that Senator Lewis has been a public official, regretfully he has forgotten about a part of the population that is invisible namely unborn babies. Senator Lewis, in each of his official roles as State Representative and now State Senator has vigorously opposed initiatives such as removing taxpayer-funding of abortion. He has been endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts, which is the largest provider of abortions. Among his legislative efforts, he notably took steps to protect sharks and was quoted as saying "the practice of "shark finning," which is both morally repugnant and harmful to the health of our oceans, is when a shark's fins are sliced off, often while the shark is still alive, with the mutilated shark thrown back into the ocean, unable to swim and left to die.

Yet, in sharp contrast to his concern for the welfare of sharks, is his support for abortion, which ends a human life. Abortion is a violent procedure that is accomplished a few different ways, all resulting in destruction of a human life. Here are a few [examples]: Surgical abortion (D & C) in which a a baby is dismembered removing its limbs first then the torso and head last. Next a Instillation abortion is performed by injecting a chemical solution consisting of either saline, urea, or prostaglandin through the abdomen and into the amniotic sac. The cervix is dilated prior to the injection, and the chemical solution induces uterine contractions which expel the baby. There is also the suction and curettage method in which the abortionist begins by dilating the mom's cervix until it is large enough to allow a cannula to be inserted into her uterus. The cannula is a hollow plastic tube that is connected to a vacuum-type pump by a flexible hose. The abortionist runs the tip of the cannula along the surface of the uterus causing the baby to be dislodged and sucked into the tube - either whole or in pieces.

I and many others believe abortion is a morally repugnant practice that results in death to innocent human babies. When their body parts are cut off while they are still alive in the womb, these little babies are moving to avoid the instruments of death while fighting for their lives. Three thousand preborn infants are killed in America every day. Every 90 seconds a child is aborted by Planned Parenthood, an organization that has consistently endorsed Senator Lewis' candidacy and others. Abortions can be obtained for any reason whatsoever, including sex selection. I wish Senator Lewis showed the same concern for unborn babies that he does for sharks.

Senator Lewis is not alone in his advocacy of the abortion industry and is joined in the 5th Middlesex district by several State Representatives who support the lucrative abortion industry, namely: Democrat Representatives Paul Brodeur (Wakefield, Melrose, & Malden ), Michael Day (Stoneham & Winchester), and Steve Ultrino (Malden ). When you vote for legislators who advocate these types of policies, you are affirming and justifying their actions, the two cannot be separated. Your vote translates, and you play a role in the policies they support.

Please urge Senator Lewis, Rep. Brodeur, Rep. Day to change their position on abortion and please vote your pro-life values regardless of your political party. This year, January 18th [sic] is the 46th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Since then, there have been over 60 million abortions in the USA.
