Sandra Birchmore’s alleged murder by former Stoughton police officer Matthew Farwell has led to calls for an additional charge for the death of her unborn baby under the Unborn Victims of Violence Act.
Farwell, accused of killing Birchmore after she revealed her pregnancy, is currently facing charges for her death. In a recent article by the Boston Herald, featured on the front page, advocates argue that both Birchmore and her unborn child should be considered victims, given the pregnancy’s role in the crime.
Massachusetts attorney Tom Harvey stated, "There were two deaths here, and the perpetrator should be charged accordingly."
Myrna Maloney Flynn, president of Massachusetts Citizens for Life, commended the Boston Herald and reporter Flint McColgan for reminding readers about the federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act—and why it is unlikely that a father will be held accountable for the deaths of both his child and the mother.
"Justice for unborn children killed in the womb absolutely qualifies as front-page news. We commend The Boston Herald and reporter Flint McColgan for reminding readers about the federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act -- and why it is unlikely that a father will be held accountable for the death of both his child and its mother," Flynn stated.
