LIFE, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

By Anne Fox, President of Massachusetts Citizens for Life

Polls show Americans taking much more “liberal” positions on sexual issues of all kinds, on drugs, and on many other issues.

The one issue where people, especially young people, are becoming more “conservative” is their opposition to abortion, according to this Washington Times article.

We, pro-lifers have always said that life is not a social issue, life is the issue. If we cannot guarantee a person’s life, how hollow are promises of housing or medical care?

As we celebrate the birthday of our country, let us celebrate the fact that more and more Americans are becoming pro-life. Your efforts and those of all pro-lifers are causing this. A Happy Independence Day to you.

This Couple Adopted 88 Special Needs Kids Over Four Decades

By Anne Fox, President of Massachusetts Citizens for Life

Since 1973 almost 60 million babies have been killed by abortion in the United States. During that same time frame over the years, an amazing couple in Georgia adopted and cared for a total of 88 children with special needs. Subsequent to their adoptions, 32 of those children died.

"The children I took in were expected to die," Geraldi, 68, told CNN. "But so many of them have lived."

Her family includes kids with intellectual disabilities, spina bifida and Down syndrome. Some have autism or extreme facial deformities.

”One child was born with only a brain stem," she said. "We took care of him. He lived to be 25 years old and never had a bedsore."

Consider what Mike and Camille Gerardi did to make those short lives happy and what those children did for Mike and Camille.

Heartwarming Story of How a Community Cared for a Child

By Anne Fox, President of Massachusetts Citizens for Life

This is a heartwarming story of a young life saved in Boston, in which Mayor Marty Walsh played a positive role. Young Kyla Smith was admitted to Children’s Hospital with an ailment that eventually required a liver transplant. What ensued is a story of a community that came together to care for her and her family, including the mayor, who underwent medical care as a child at the same age as Kyla that also disrupted his life and schooling.

An Interview with an Assisted Suicide Doctor

By Nancy Valko

It’s not often that we get a glimpse into the assisted suicide movement from the perspective of a medical professional who actually participates in terminating the lives of the terminally ill. Most seem to prefer anonymity.

Sign the Petition for Life

Massachusetts Citizens for Life is sending out thousands of printed Petitions for Life through the mail from Pittsfield to Cape Cod. Those who prefer may fill out this online version. And if you haven’t received a petition by mail, please do fill out this petition. By signing this Petition, you are urging your elected officials to vote “YES” on legislation that will:

  1. Cut off Planned Parenthood’s tax funding; and,
  2. Protect women from coercion by requiring abortionists to inform pregnant women that it is illegal for anyone to force them to end their child’s life against their will.

Our staff will combine your signed Petition with more from your area and deliver them to the State House at a time when it will make the most dramatic impact.

After you’ve signed your Petitionwould you also make a pro-life financial contribution today to fully fund our programs to spread the truth about Planned Parenthood and speak up for women being pressured into abortion? The pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood raise hundreds of millions of dollars from foundations and corporations and celebrities each year, in addition to the hundreds of millions they get from taxpayers, Pro-Life groups like MCFL rely on pro-lifers like you to respond generously.

We don’t need to raise hundreds of millions of dollars. Heck, we don’t even need to raise one millions dollars. We do need to fund our petition drives and letter-writing campaigns, our in-person lobbying efforts, pro-life advocacy on social media, mass mailings and everything else we do to give a voice to the voiceless. We do need you. Thank you for help us save unborn babies in Massachusetts.

Abortion and Breast Cancer Link Revealed at Mother’s Day Dinner

By Al DiLascia

At the 44th Annual Pioneer Valley Massachusetts Citizens for Life (PV-MCFL) Mother’s Day Dinner held at Chez Josef in Agawam, on May 11, 2017, Dr. Joel Brind gave a pretty convincing presentation on the link between abortion and breast cancer. His studies, research, and most importantly data show that there is a higher probability of breast cancer for women who have had an abortion. Dr. Brind graduated from Yale University, and received his doctorate in Basic Medical Sciences from New York University, with specialization in biochemistry, physiology, and immunology. He is currently a professor of human biology and endocrinology at Baruch College of the City University of New York.

MCFL’s 2017 Convention Keeps the Momentum Going

On Saturday, April 8, a beautiful spring day, several dozen pro-lifers gathered on the Boston College campus for Massachusetts Citizens for Life’s annual convention to hear speakers and to hold discussions on topics ranging from abortion to physician-assisted suicide.

(See photos from the day at the end of this article.)

The theme of the day was “Keep the Momentum Going,” based on the fact that nationwide and in Massachusetts, the pro-life movement is making advances. Anne Fox, president of MCFL, explained, "Abortions are down one-third in the country as a whole and down 55% in Massachusetts, pro-life legislators are in the majority in Congress and in virtually all the state legislatures, we have elected a pro-life President and … we'll have a new Supreme Court Justice whom we expect to rule fairly on life cases. This is amazing momentum on which we plan to build."

Stopping Assisted Suicide By Regulating the Drugs

By Anne Fox, President of Massachusetts Citizens for Life

Wesley Smith has an ingenious way to deal with doctor-prescribed suicide: "I support a prohibition on using federally controlled substances such as opioids from being prescribed for assisted suicide — a different approach altogether that would not invalidate any state law nor create a new federal crime."

His explanation comes in response to claims that he proposes taking away from states the ability to legalize doctor-prescribed suicide, when in reality his solution is in line with the authority already held by the federal government to regulate prescription drugs. He also says it would pass constitutional muster with the Supreme Court.

This would not simply be a way to end run state laws either. Smith points out that in the Netherlands and in Oregon, where DPS is already legal, studies show that many patients suffer disturbing and painful side effects from opioids as they die.

The Slippery Slope of Designer Babies

By Anne Fox, President of Massachusetts Citizens for Life

"If you are freaked out that someone is currently editing human embryos, then today is the day to freak out,” according to a member of the National Academy of Medicine. As those of you who have been following the scientific progress in the MCFL quarterly members’ magazine know, much good can be done with the same techniques, but they can also be used to produce "designer babies.” This article in Sunday's Globe analyzes the scientific, ethical, and social problems arising now which will mushroom in the future.

Should this come to pass, some parents may be tempted to inquire about genetically augmenting their children, says Jeffrey Kahn, the director of the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University. “Say we know how to encourage muscle growth in these children,” he says. “Couldn’t you use the same technique for a linebacker? The line between curative and enhancement depends upon the person using it.”

And thus begins the slippery slope.

Liz and Lizzy Standing Up For Their Fellow Disabled

By Anne Fox, President of Massachusetts Citizens for Life

Good for Liz! British disability activist Liz Carr has created “Assisted Suicide: the Musical,” which has been described as lively, refreshing, and pro-life. I wish she lived in the US so we could have her speak.

And good for Lizzy Cannon, a teenager with spina bifida who also has a good sense of humor and makes strong points about how the disabled can lead great lives.
