By Anne Fox, President of Massachusetts Citizens for Life
Richard Doerflinger has retired after 36 years as associate director of the Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) where he very effectively used his gift of saying the tough things without giving offense. He has been a prophetic voice on doctor-prescribed suicide. Richard was one of those people you thought would always be there. Ironically, he is retiring to the state of Washington so I think we'll be hearing a lot more from him about DPS.
National Right to Life has printed an article of Richard's that is one of the best out there! After citing the escalating numbers of suicides in Oregon and showing that the elderly and the poor are most at risk of being abused, Richard states:
”Eighteen years ago Derek Humphry, Hemlock’s founder, wrote in his book Freedom to Die that 'in the final analysis, economics, not the quest for broadened individual liberties or increased autonomy, will drive assisted suicide to the plateau of acceptable practice.' C&C wants to draw the curtain over this aspect of its agenda. The rest of us, especially seniors, need to open our eyes and see through the masquerade.”
Read the entire article; everyone should.
And here is more about Richard, for whom we wish the best of retirements.
