Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10, the Joint Committee on Revenue will hear testimony concerning H.2542, a unique part of MCFL’s legislative agenda for this session.
If passed, this bill would allow taxpayers to indicate on their state tax return whether they would like the portion of their taxes which normally would go to pay for abortions to instead be directed toward publicizing Baby Safe Havens.
The Baby Safe Haven Law in Massachusetts is a life-saving measure which allows unwanted infants to be left safely in designated areas with no questions asked. This prevents their becoming victims to infanticide or exposure. Since passage, the Baby Safe Haven program has resulted in a statistically large reduction in exposure deaths among infants but efforts to publicize safe-haven locations are chronically underfunded, given the importance of the program.
The benefits of the Taxpayer Conscience Protection Act do not end with Safe Haven funding, however, nor even with the formal recognition of pro-choice conscience rights. The bill, if passed, would also finally force the government of the Commonwealth to provide a complete and accurate accounting of all public monies that are spent on or in support of so-called “abortion services.” Taxpayers would finally get to see how much their money is spent destroying lives and hold politicians accountable. This alone would be worth the effort to pass this measure.
The hearings will take place in room B-2 (in the basement) at the Statehouse. They start at 10:00AM. Let your elected officials hear from you. Stand up for life.
