The Boston Globe on Sunday published an opinion piece, “Life and Death Before Roe v Wade”, that includes many clippings from the Globe archives of illegal abortions before the 1970s. The point of the article is that, if abortion is made illegal, some people will still participate in illegal abortions.
We are talking about human lives here so I don’t wish to sound flip, but … If anything is made illegal–say bank robbery or murder–there will still be people who break the law. The reasoning of the authors would lead to a society with no laws at all — a ludicrous proposal.
The only other point in the brief piece is the claim that the Texas law designed to make abortion “clinics” as safe as other surgical facilities, has resulted in 250,000 women trying to self abort. That, of course, is a number larger than there were pregnant women in Texas last year. For a professional analysis of that claim, read Michael New, “Zero Evidence…”.
At least the piece was in the “Ideas” section!
